Cast stone ashlar masonry from UKCSA member Forticrete provides a prominent feature at the new Red Lion Quarter development in the Lincolnshire market town of Spalding.
Used to raise the external elevations and internal atrium of the £6.5m mixed use town centre development, the standard and bespoke ashlar blocks replicate an engaging bond pattern seen by Fielden & Mawson Architects on a project in Nottingham. Forticrete designed a number of specials to overcome the tight angles of the building. The Bathstone-coloured cast was used above two courses of pewter-coloured polished masonry at ground level. For solid masonry construction such as this, cast stone is a durable, attractive and cost-effective alternative to quarried natural stone.
Constructed by Wilmott Dixon, the development opened in April 2011. A collaboration between various public bodies including South Holland District Council, East Midlands Development Agency, Lincolnshire Enterprise, Lincolnshire County Council and Boston College, the development replaces buildings that had been derelict for a decade. The facilities include a food court for regional produce, a further education college, restaurant and small business units.
